Bhamo to Mandalay
It is possible to travel from Bhamo to Mandalay aboard one of the cargo boats. You could sleep on the deck as a lot of the locals did for $12 American or as we did in a cabin for $60. We travelled down the Irrawaddy for two full days stopping to unload and pick up

In late November 2019, I returned to Jinghong in China. This time hoping to travel further into China to where the Mekong enters Yunnan province from Tibet. In 2017 I again returned to Myanmar, this time wanting to explore more of the Irrawaddy river. I flew to Bhamo which is the deepest freshwater port in Northern Myanmar. Goods travel via the Irrawaddy river back and forth to Mandalay. From Bhamo they are then transported throughout Northern Myanmar. You can view Bhamo’s location

Part of the reason for my travel to Myitkyina was to experience and photograph the Manao festival. I was one of few westerners there. I explained I would love to take photographs and was given a VIP pass to access all areas. It was a wonderful spectacle.
